BIO:
“…let me make it easier for you; forget the rest, Jess McAvoy is one of the best.”
Clem Bastow, The Age, Melbourne
One of Melbourne's favourite artists, Jess McAvoy, has followed up the success of her 2010
invitation performance at Canadian music festival North by North East by relocating to North
America.
Recently short- listed for the APRA Professional Development Awards (celebrating and supporting
the careers of outstanding Australian musicians), Jess headlined a sell out show at the Corner
Hotel (Melbourne) in June, celebrating her involvement in the independent Australian music
industry to date. The show featured cameos by some of Australia's A-list of performers, who
paid the ultimate musical compliment by interpreting their favourites from McAvoy's 200+ original
songbook.
A live performer since 16, McAvoy has wowed and won over audiences in Australia and abroad
for over fifteen years with her elegant, hook – laden urban folk genius and her raw, passionate and
powerful performances.
A self- managed artist who produces her own albums, released on her own label; 'Henduwin',
McAvoy’s commitment to the independent ethos and involvement in the local music community
has been a touchstone for many new artists. Her impressive list of both international and high
profile Australian supports (Ani DiFranco, Toni Childs, The Waifs and supported Michelle
Shocked, Ember Swift, Clare Bowditch and the Feeding Set, Kate Ceberano, Pete Murray, Tim
Rogers, Tex Perkins, the list goes on) and festival appearances (Woodford Folk Festival, The Falls
Festival, Pyramid Rock, Chill Island, Wave Rock, Make Poverty History and more) are proof that
you can make it on merit without the power of a major label behind you.
McAvoy's international adventures already include performances in New York at the famed
Knitting Factory, and CBGBs with repeat performances at the Bitter End.
In 2006, Jess McAvoy released the critically acclaimed Into the Dark, declared “Album of the
Week” and “an album to treasure” by Beat Magazine (Melbourne). The Age Entertainment Guide
gushed: “Let me make it easier for you... forget the rest, Jess McAvoy is one of the best”- four and
a half stars.
As the Sun Falls (2008) was toted “Her finest album to date” and “tempered with different
flavours... each re-affirming Jess McAvoy as one of Australia's more original undiscovered
treasures.”
2011 has brought forth her twelfth release “Somewhere” which, along with her other releases, is
available on Itunes.
Twelve independent releases, Eight Australian and Three international Tours, Hundreds of shows,
and she just keeps going.
”Jess McAvoy is the real deal”
Renee Montgomery, Beat
McAvoy is also now a published writer and an established exhibiting painter since 2009.
